Document and Identity Fraud: Current Trends

This presentation provides investigators with a practical overview of identity document fraud trends observed through a provincial forensic document and identity verification function. The session will introduce who we are and the role we play in identifying and investigating fraud, followed by a focused discussion on the most common and emerging methods of identity document fraud, including document alteration, photo substitution, and the creation of fictitious identity documents.

The presentation will include real-world examples, indicators investigators should watch for, and how forensic document examination supports broader fraud investigations, followed by time for questions and discussion.

Angy Habib

Any Habib is the Assistant Director of the Document & Identity Verification team within Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction - Special Investigations Unit (SIU), based in Calgary. She oversees the Graduated Driver Licensing Exemption program and the Facial Recognition program in the province of Alberta and leads training, and outreach initiatives in support of fraud prevention and investigations.

She brings over 14 years of experience in forensic document examination, fraud investigations, and identity verification and manages a team of 10 forensic document experts in Calgary and Edmonton. She is a designated Peace Officer, a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and has provided expert testimony in court related to counterfeit foreign driver’s licences. She is also a member of the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators (AAMVA) Card Design Standards Subcommittee Working Group and the AAMVA Facial Recognition Working Group.

Prior to joining SIU, Angy spent ten years with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) at the Embassy of Canada in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where she served as Supervisor of the Immigration Section.

With experience spanning fraud investigations, forensic document examination, motor vehicle policy, and immigration processes, Angy brings a practical and investigative perspective to identity document fraud and emerging trends.
