Who doesn’t know someone who has fallen victim to fraud or misconduct? As we prepare ourselves to be more vigilant and aware, the landscape around us continues to rapidly evolve and is expected to evolve significantly in 2025 and beyond, driven by technological advancements and the increasing sophistication of fraudsters. It presents complex challenges that individuals and organizations must address. Some may be complacent. Others may act too slow and not keep up. But no, not us! By understanding the latest trends, informed people can better resist and act on ever-increasing threats. You can protect both your own and your organizations assets and help those around you protect theirs.

Liezel Pistorius

As a seasoned professional with 16+ years of experience, to uncover evidence relevant to reported allegations or crimes. Liezel's career started with KPMG in South Africa, and she worked with clients across the world, with operations in North America (Canada and US), Africa, Australia, Mexico, Chile, Germany, and the Caribbean Islands. Some of Liezel's most recent experience include providing both proactive and reactive risk advisory services and white-collar crime investigations into employee misconduct, conflicts of interest allegations, contractual irregularities, procurement wrongdoings, billing schemes, allegations of theft, abuse or wrongdoing, theft of intellectual property, cyber-related incidents, cryptocurrency asset tracing, Mareva injunction preparation and execution, Anton Pillar Order (APO) execution, digital or computer forensics, electronic discovery (eDiscovery), and other forensic advisory services. Invited as a speaker at several events across Canada, Liezel delivered presentations about fraud and misconduct including most recently - Corruption, Integrity and Ethics; Fraud Risks and Awareness Considerations; Uncovering Truths: Forensic Accounting Strategies and Best Practices; Fraud Awareness in Not-for-Profits; Cryptocurrency and Litigation; Professional Ethics & Fraud; How to Spot Unusual Patterns & Prevent Recurring Digital Fraud Trends; The Digital Fraud Journey; Ongoing Challenges and the Link between Cyber and Forensic, among others.

Owen Key

Owen Key is a Director in KPMG’s Risk Consulting Cyber Security practice with over 34 years of experience, most recently as the Chief Security Officer and the Chief Information Security Officer with The City of Calgary. He is currently KPMG's National Lead for OT and Physical Security. During his tenure, Owen has been delivering successful projects and programs involving Cyber Security, Physical Security, Operations, Computer Forensics and Incident Response, Corporate Investigations, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) security, Operational and IT Business Continuity, Identity and Access Management (IAM), and Project and Program Management. During his career, Owen was a Detective with the New Zealand Police and a Senior Manager with KPMG responsible for their Computer Forensic practice in Western Canada. Owen graduated in Commerce, with Diplomas in Security & Risk management, and Policing Studies. He is A+ certified from COMPTIA and is an Associate Business Continuity Planner from the Disaster Recovery Institute. As a CSO / CISO, Owen was responsible for the protection of $65B worth of assets, information and 15,000 employees. He oversaw the security of all physical assets, information technology, operational technology and personnel operating in a large enterprise environment, including diverse business operations such as Calgary Transit, Water & Wastewater, Roads, 3500+ facilities, Parks, Emergency Management, 911, 311, Recreation and golf courses, Waste & Recycling, Calgary Fire Dept. and more.
